Let's see how it works. There are two types of garage door springs that are usually found on sectional garage doors: torsion springs and side-mounted springs. Torsion springs are mounted on a stationary metal shaft that is located above and parallel to the top of the garage door frame. One end is attached to a stationary plate located above the center of the door frame and the springs extend along the shaft. They operate by twisting as the cables attached to each side of the lowest garage door panel close the garage door. This tension makes it easier to lift the garage door from its closed position. Side-mounted springs are long heavy springs that are mounted on each side of the upper garage door track. They operate by using pulleys, but they perform the same function as the torsion springs because they come under tension when the garage door is closed. This makes lifting the door easier. Even if only one of the springs gives out on a garage door, you should always replace both of them. It is only natural that if one spring breaks, the other is likely to break soon after, so you will be saving yourself a lot of work by doing the entire job at one time. Also, having a new spring operating with an old spring can cause the door to be out of balance and cause other problems with the door itself or the door opener. There is a difference in how you adjust or change the springs depending on what type of springs you have on the door. Side mounted springs must be adjusted when the door is open, while torsion springs must have the door closed before you start to work on them. |
